It is your birth right to love yourself.  Whatever has happened to you to cause you to have low self-love can be changed.  You learned to not love yourself while you were growing up, so usually it's because your parents didn’t know how to love themselves either. They couldn't give you what they couldn't give to themselves.  Lack of self-love gets passed down from one generation to the next, unless someone in your family, like yourself, changes the programming! Be very proud of yourself!

You were supposed to learn how to love yourself growing up.  I also grew up in a family that didn’t teach me to love myself.  Neither of my parents knew how to love themselves either, so they had no idea how to teach me or my brother or my sister.

What is Self Love?

The best definition of learning how to love yourself is… meeting all of your needs with compassion.  Another way of defining self love is… having goodwill for yourself.

Are you meeting all of your needs?

Do you have goodwill for yourself?

Your most important needs fall neatly into five (5) categories described brilliantly by Abraham Maslow as follows:

  • Taking care of your physical needs.
  • Taking care of your safety and security needs.
  • Taking care of your belonging and acceptance needs.
  • Taking care of your self-esteem needs.
  • Taking care of your need to grow and become all you can be, which Maslow called "Self-Actualization."

Learning how to love yourself is not a luxury for some people to achieve.  Loving yourself is a need and your desire to reconnect with your real self is the healthiest goal you can have for yourself.
